Making Job Sharing Work For All Of Us

Lake Cable and private high school team up for work study program success

We probably can all remember “Career Day” at school in which an adult came into our classroom and explained what they did for a living. At Lake Cable, we’re proud to be involved with something even bigger – helping students not only experience our environment on a deeper level but also earn income to cover a large portion of their private school tuition costs.

It’s what happened when we were asked to be involved with a program through Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory School.

This high school based on the west side of Chicago partners with businesses in the area to fill full-time entry-level jobs for students challenged by limited economic resources.

Full-time? But how does that work for a student?

That’s the beauty of the program – one great opportunity within a company creates many more. Christ The King uses a team-oriented model that ensures each of four students can share one full-time role in the sponsoring company while balancing their studies. Each student within the job-sharing team is assigned one workday, working a total of five full business days per month.

The model of this Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) is actually used by over twenty-four schools throughout the country.

Real opportunity in more ways than one

What we enjoy about our involvement with the Corporate Work Study Program from Christ The King is that it’s not merely a form of charity or a donation. We’re providing students with the chance to gain valuable experience in the real world while the program covers all payroll, Workers’ Compensation and other employment issues.

And let’s not forget one other important aspect:

As a result of our work study program sponsorship,

Lake Cable paid for 67% of the cost

of each student’s education at Christ The King.

For us, it’s a refreshing way to help fund a child’s education and serve the local community. Based on their participation, other businesses in the Chicagoland would seem to agree, such as Harris Private Bank, DePaul University, Rehab Institute of Chicago, Winston & Strawn, Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago Blackhawks and many more.

We’re looking forward to continuing our partnership at Lake Cable with Christ The King in the coming year.
